Clay tile roofs have been used for millennia (dating back to 2500 B.C.) in both China and the Near East. Ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans all used clay tile roofs, and they’re used to this day on Mediterranean and Spanish-style homes throughout the U.S.

Their distinctive rustic beauty is one reason they’ve endured for so long, but clay tile is also considered a premium roofing material. It comes in soft, rich earthy colors and it’s fire-retardant, which is undoubtedly why our distant ancestors began to use clay tile in lieu of thatched roofs, which were real fire dangers in an age when heat and cooking were both provided by indoor fires.

Clay tiles can either be flat or semi-cylindrical, making them perfect for every old-world style home imaginable. They’re not cheap, but try to imagine a beautiful Spanish-style stucco home without Spanish tile roofing. Anything else just wouldn’t look right. And when looked at in terms of longevity, clay tile roofs have the lowest life cycle costs of any roofing material. It’s not uncommon for a clay tile roof to outlive the occupants of a home! Because of their long life cycle, tile roofs don’t contribute to the unnecessary clogging up of landfills. Plus, their manufacture doesn’t deplete natural resources, and no chemicals are used in their production, making them a very eco-friendly roofing material.< /p>

Cement tile roofs are a cheaper alternative, but their color fades over time, unlike clay tiles, which keep their rich color for decades. That means if you need to replace a few concrete tiles, you’ll have a very hard time finding any that match the rest of the roof.
